What are the benefits?
Since doors are hollow and have small holes in the lower pinch seams to help allow dirt and water to exit the inner door preventing rust, those elements can access the backside of door panels and eventually get them wet and dirty on the backside and possibly the interior side of the door panel. Vehicles come from the factory with moisture barriers but often thrown away when the doors get worked on over time.
